Housing Benefit or the Housing Cost element of Universal Creditare welfare benefits  for people on a low income to help them pay their rent.  Not every young person is entitled to Housing Costs.

If you are a care leaver please do contact your local Children's Services office to find out more about what help and support you might be entitled to. Details can be found on the Who to Contact page.

You may be eligible for help from social services if you are a care leaver and spent a total of at least 13 weeks in care since the age of 14 and were still looked after ( in care) on or after your 16th birthday . The 13 weeks doesn't have to be all in one go.  You will probably have different leaving care rights if you have spent less than a total of 13 weeks in care.

If you are in one of these situations, you could be eligible for help from social services and/or the housing department.

If you leave care when you are 16 or 17, the social services department that last looked after you is responsible for you once you turn 18 and until you are 25.  It has to continue to give you any help you need, even if you move to another area of the country. This includes giving you support and advice, including help and advice finding suitable housing and helping you find and keep your own place.
