Get a copy of a certificate from Cumbria Registration Service

Cumbria Registration Service want to keep you and our teams safe and are reducing the number of people who visit our offices and reducing the need to pass paperwork or money between people.  These measures are important to reduce the risk of cross infection.

To do this we have introduced the following measures:

You can:

  • Order a copy certificate online
  • If you can't order online for any reason please call our team on 0300 303 2472 but please be mindful that we experience high call volumes and so we always recommend online as the quickest and easiest way to order.
  • Ask a friend or family member to pay using their payment card if you don't have one.  Please be careful with your payment details at all times

You can't:

  • Go to one of our offices to order a certificate 
  • Send us an order in the post
  • Send us a cheque or postal order as we are reducing the paper we touch and also the need to go to the bank
  • Pay in cash 
  • Collect certificates once they are ready.  These will be posted to you only.

    All birth, death and marriage certificates for Cumbria are held by Cumbria Certificate Services based in Carlisle.

    Order your copy certificate:

    All orders must be paid using a debit or credit card in your name and registered to your address.

    The standard certificate will be issued within 15 working days (In Cumbria we endeavour to issue within 10 working days) and once issued, posted out to you by Royal Mail Service.  

    We also provide a priority service if required. 

    If we are unable to locate the record and issue the certificate a full refund will be made

    Please note you cannot order certificates by email and under no circumstances should you put credit/debit card details in an email.

    Online and telephone orders: Payment made by credit card or debit card on application.

    Payment must be by a debit or credit card in your name and registered to your address. Alternatively we would need to speak to the cardholder who is willing to use their card to pay for your transaction.

    If we are unable to locate the record and issue the certificate a full refund will be made.

    We offer 2 service levels for all our certificates:

    1.    Priority certificates

    • If ordered by 3pm they are issued by close of business the same day.
    • If ordered after 3pm they are issued the following business day by 4pm.

    Once issued priority certificates are posted by Royal Mail 1st Class post.

    We do not accept any liability for items once they are in the hands of the postal service, alternatively you may wish to upgrade the postage as follows or collect in person.

    Confirmed delivery

    It is also possible to have your certificate delivered by confirmed delivery.  This service aims to deliver your order the next working day and gives you the added benefits of:

    • proof of delivery including a signature from the receiver
    • the ability to check online or on your mobile to see when your item has been delivered
    • compensation cover up to £50 for loss or damage.

    Confirmed delivery can be selected at an additional cost of £2.50 in your basket

    Priority delivery guaranteed by 1pm- priority certificates only

    If you need your certificate urgently it is possible to to select the priority delivery. This service aims to deliver your letter the next working day before 1pm and gives you the added benefits of:

    • proof of delivery including a signature from the receiver
    • the ability to check online or on your mobile to see when your item has been delivered
    • compensation cover up to £50 for loss or damage.

    Ordering timescales for priority delivery  

    Order Saturday any time Receive Tuesday before 1pm
    Order Sunday any time Receive Tuesday before 1pm

    Priority delivery can be selected at an additional cost of £7.50 in your basket.

    2.    Standard certificates

    Please note:  The above timeframes cannot be guaranteed.  We have an excellent customer satisfaction record however in extreme circumstances it may not be possible.  Delivery of your order is the responsibility of Royal Mail.  Any claims would be through their compensation scheme as detailed on their website.  Cumbria County Council does not accept liability for postage.

    • your full name, address and daytime telephone number in case we need to contact you regarding the request
    • the Registration district where the event took place. This must be within Cumbria
    • the exact date of the event or for family history purposes a minimum of the year and quarter are essential
    • full names of the parties involved where possible otherwise we can not ensure the correct entry will be issued.

    Important information about marriage entries

    If the request is a marriage certificate then you must provide the exact place name of the register office or the name of the church.  This is very important for the location of the entry.  We are unable to process certificates that do not include this information.
