Find out about the Chairman

Cllr Tony Markley

Chairman Markley

I am proud and honoured to be entrusted with the privileged position of Chairman of Cumbria County Council and look forward to promoting Cumbria and representing all its communities in my time of office.

I have the pleasure of not only living in but representing the most north-westerly town in England, Silloth. I have been a councillor for over 27 years representing Silloth and the Solway Coast at Town, Borough and County levels.

I grew up in Abbeytown where my family owned an agricultural engineering business. I met and married my wife Denise 42 years ago and we moved to Silloth where we ran a successful national and international haulage and coach business for 39 years. We now have rental properties and storage facilities in Silloth.

We have three children, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Our daughter and her family reside locally, our eldest son and his family live in the Australia and our youngest son and his family live in the North East.

I am a true local Cumbrian and representing all local constituents to the best of my ability is extremely important to me.

I have been invigorated and blown away by the council officers' and public sector's response to COVID-19 and in my role as Chairman this year I would like to support the recovery from this awful virus and see Cumbrian businesses and community groups go from strength to strength.

My chosen charities this year are the RNLI and NWAS Community First Responders. They do an amazing job across our county supporting local communities and visitors to live a better, safer and more enjoyable life.

I look forward to my year as Chairman, travelling around this wonderful county, raising the profile of the council and promoting all the benefits Cumbria has to offer.
