Find out about the Chairman

Cllr Christine Bowditch

Cllr Christine Bowditch

It is a great honour and privilege to be elected Chair of Cumbria County Council. I am a Cumbrian and have a passion for the county, all it's great diversity and making it better for its people. The workers at Sellafield, the farming communities, the people who keep this county going through our annual influx of tourists, people who work in shops, pubs, cafes, manufacturing, businesses, people who keep our infrastructure going, professionals, public servants, in fact anyone who has chosen to make Cumbria their home.

I have always had a great interest in politics. I am a former teacher and was also deputy head of a primary school in Carlisle. Chair of a local charity for disability for 25 years. Married to Steven for 45 years, a former Carlisle City Councillor and Mayor of Carlisle so I've had a fulfilling year as Mayoress. We have a daughter Kate, Deputy Director of HR at a London hospital and her husband Pete, also from Carlisle, a newly commissioned officer in the British Army who has served in both Northern Ireland and Afghanistan and a son, Andrew who has Severe Learning Disabilities on the Autism spectrum giving me the drive to support people with disabilities.

As well as supporting my own ward, I am on both Adult and Children and Young People Scrutiny Advisory Boards, Corporate Parenting Board, Health Partnership Board as well as Learning Disability and Autism Partnership Board. I am also Carlisle Champion for Autism which involves me talking to groups raising awareness of the difficulties for autistic people and their families.

In addition, I am a Governor at a school in Carlisle, Chair of Carlisle Mencap and on the boards of Waverley Viaduct Action Group, Henry Lonsdale Charitable Trust and Carlisle Educational Charity.

My chosen charities this year are Carlisle Mencap and People First.

I look forward to my year as Chair, meeting people and travelling around our beautiful county.
