Cumbria Archive Service - Petty Sessions and Magistrates' Court records

Petty Sessions and Magistrates` Courts

Informal meetings of a few local justices of the peace developed into petty sessions which dealt with minor criminal proceedings.  More formal petty sessional divisions or districts within each county were created in 1828.  Petty sessions have evolved into the present day magistrates' courts which deal with minor crime and licensing.
