Cumbria is served by a number of railway lines that form part of the national rail network.

The West Coast Main Line offers services to major conurbations such as Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham and London (Euston).  There are stations at Carlisle, Penrith North Lakes and Oxenholme Lake District.

Cumbria has three community railway lines including the Lakes Line from Oxenholme to Windermere, the scenic Cumbrian Coast Line from Carlisle to Barrow-in-Furness and the Furness Line connecting Barrow-in-Furness with Carnforth and on to Lancaster. The spectacular Settle-Carlisle line links northern Cumbria with the Yorkshire Dales and Leeds via the beautiful Eden Valley. Further north, the Tyne Valley Line links Carlisle with Newcastle passing world heritage sites along the way.
