30/6/2011 - UPDATED LIST (30 June): Strike action and school closures

*** IMPORTANT NOTE FOR PARENTS: Parents MUST contact their child's school to confirm whether it will be closed, partially closed or open whether or not the school is on this list.

Headteachers will have written to parents to explain individual school arrangements. If the school has not written to you then please contact the school direct for an update.

Cumbria County Council has compiled a list of schools which have notified the council that they will be closed, partially closed, or open today (30 June) due to strike action by teachers. This list is also on the council's website

Ultimately individual teachers are not required to inform the school of their intention to strike. So parents are strongly advised to double check on the status of their child's school even if it is included on the council's list.

The council has stressed that the decision to close or partially close the school should be taken based upon the head teacher's judgement of the extent to which the school can operate safely and effectively.

The head teacher will take account of the numbers of staff involved in industrial action and whether those remaining can ensure the safe working of the school. It may be that there are sufficient staff available to require only a partial closure with one or more year groups continuing to attend whilst the remainder do not.

The council's position is that governing bodies and head teachers are encouraged to keep schools open to maintain continuity of educational provision, taking into account health and safety requirements. However, the council would encourage parents to respect the decisions of the Head Teachers and Governors if they have decided their school must close.
