13/10/2008 - Books good enough to eat on offer in school dining halls

Books are firmly on the menu at secondary schools across the county from this week (Monday 13 October) as every school meal comes with the chance to win a literary prize.

To celebrate the National Year of Reading, the county council’s school meal service and library services have arranged for special lunchtimes where each student taking a meal will receive a raffle ticket offering them the chance to win one of five book vouchers and books for young people by popular authors.

The special National Year of Reading lunchtime will also feature displays and stands by the council’s public and school library teams, featuring the full range of library services, including CDs and DVDs.

The special school lunch events run between Tuesday 14 October and Tuesday 21 October at the following schools on the following days:

Netherhall School, Maryport
West Lakes Academy, Egremont

Wednesday 15 October
Cartmel Priory School
Richard Rose Central Academy
St Bernard’s School, Barrow

Thursday 16 October

Samuel King School, Alston
Southfield Technical College, Workington 

Tuesday 21 October
Nelson Thomlinson School, Wigton
Ullswater Community College, Penrith
Whitehaven School
