5/1/2006 - Say no to smoke detector salesmen

Cumbria County Council Trading Standards Department is warning the public against buying smoke detectors from door-to-door salesmen.   The alert comes after reports of salesmen in the Brampton area targeting the homes of the elderly and offering to fit smoke detectors for £40.

County councillor Geoff Hodgson, spokesman for Trading Standards and the Fire and Rescue Service, says:

“Cumbria County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service will provide and fit smoke detectors free to any Cumbrian resident.   They also provide a free home fire safety check.   My advice to anyone approached in person or by telephone by these salespeople is not to allow them into your house, and tell them to go away. Anyone wanting a free smoke detector fitted should contact their local fire station."
