Broughton's green-fingered enthusiasts got a boost today when Cumbria County Council's Local Committee for Allerdale reccomended that the village allotments should be sold at a discount to the Parish Council.
Broughton Parish Council are seeking to buy the allotments at West End and the Nook. As it will benefit the local community Allerdale Local Committee reccomemended that the county council's cabinet should approve the sale under the “well-being” policy. This would ensure that the Parish Council can buy the ground at a 25% discount.
The discounted sale would put the Parish Council in an excellent position to progress its development plans for the site. The Parish Council wish to improve facilities at the site and bring control of the village's allotments down to village level. In particular they want to improve the village footpath system that the rights of way across the allotments provide. They also plan to work with Broughton Scouts to try and secure a permanent scout hut base at the site.
County councillor Gerald Humes, Chairman of Allerdale Local Committee said:
"The allotments in Broughton provide an important recreational facility and the villagers get a lot out of them. It is sensible that the allotments should be looked after at a village level especially when the parish council have some excellent plans to improve them. Broughton Parish Council is well organised and provides excellent leadership in Broughton, I am delighted to support them."
