18/12/2006 - Cumbria County Council Christmas arrangements

Cumbria County Council will continue to provide key services over the Christmas period. Here are details of opening times, out-of-hours contacts and other relevant information.

Adult Social Care

Services will operate as usual up until 4:30pm on 22nd December. Offices will be closed as normal over the weekend as well as Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Offices will be open as normal on 27th, 28th and 29th December but closed again over the weekend and on 1st January. Services return to normal on 2nd January.

During closure periods, the out-of-hours number - 01228-526690 - can be used 24-hours a day for adult social care emergencies.

Meals on Wheels

The Meals on Wheels service will be operating as usual over the Christmas period. Contacts are:

Children's Services (for children's social care)

Services will operate as usual up until 4:30pm on 22nd December. Offices will be closed as normal over the weekend as well as Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Somerset House, Duke Street, Whitehaven

Market Street, Barrow-in-Furness 

During closure periods, the same out-of-hours number as above - 01228-526690 - can be used 24-hours a day for children's social care emergencies.

Recycling and Rubbish

The following Household Waste Recycling Centres will be open every day apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's day:

- Clay Flatts, Workington

- Glasson Industrial Estate, Maryport

- Canal Head, Kendal

- Rothay Holme, Ambleside

- Yeathouse Quarry, Frizington

- Redmills Quarry, Millom

- Project Furness, Ormsgill

- Flusco, Penrith

- Hobsons Lane, Kirkby Stephen.

However, Rome Street in Carlisle, Syke Park in Wigton, Guides Lot at Grange-over-Sands and Morecambe Road in Ulverston will be closed on Christmas Eve, Sunday, December 24th, as well as on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years' Day.

Please remember to recycle cards, wrapping paper and as much Christmas waste as possible.

Highways

24-hour emergency and winter maintenance cover will be provided by Cumbria Highways throughout Christmas and New Year.

Supervisors will be on duty day and night at the county's main highways depots and dozens of other staff will be on-call at our main depots to deal with highways issues such as severe weather problems throughout the holiday period. Cumbria Highways Hotline Highway will, as always, operate 24 hours a day on 0845 609 6 609 for reporting highways problems. During public holidays over the Christmas period calls should be limited to serious highways problems such as flooding, landslips and severe weather.

Libraries

All libraries will be closed from 24th December to 1st January inclusive, with the exception of Kendal, Whitehaven, Workington, Penrith and Carlisle - which will also be open on 28th, 29th and 30th December. Barrow Library will be open on 28th and 29th December. Normal library hours will resume on 2nd January.

Transport and Travel

Public transport information available from Traveline on 0870 608 2 608. 

The line is usually open between 7am and 8pm but will close at 5pm on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve and remain closed all day on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

Media Enquiries

The Media Team is operating an emergency-only service for urgent media enquiries between 22nd December and 2nd January. We will not be handling routine enquiries during this period.
