Carlisle United Study Centre is saying goodbye to the latest group of young people to come through its doors with a series of presentations this week.
The study centre has been involved with the national 'Playing for Success' scheme for the last three years. Based at Carlisle United's Brunton Park football ground, the scheme is a partnership between local education authorities, professional sports clubs and the Department for Education and Skills (DfES).
The Carlisle scheme provides after school study support sessions for children from local primary and secondary schools. It runs a ten week programme each term.
Research into Playing for Success has shown that it offers quality study support. It is also an excellent, cost effective means of raising standards in literacy, numeracy and ICT as well as a way of improving student motivation and encouraging positive attitudes to independent learning.
Over the week, 120 pupils will be presented with certificates by a player from Carlisle United. On Wednesday and Thursday (6 and 7 December), following the presentations, invited guests from the football club, businesses, Cumbria County Council and local schools will be joining the pupils and viewing the centre and the work of the children.
As well as Playing for Success, Carlisle United Study Centre has also been involved in developing activities aimed at helping young people understand the need for a healthy lifestyle, fair play and being a good citizen. The centre was also involved in an event to help stamp racism out of football.
