1/12/2006 - Art matters in Cumbrian schools

Expert help and advice for Cumbrian schools embarking on major new art projects is now just the click of a mouse away.

Cumbria County Council backed arts charity Cumbria Arts in Education (CAE) has launched an exiting new website www.cumbriaarts.co.uk

Here, schools will find a list of artists who are available to work with children and students, case studies of school based arts projects and funding information.

The charity, which also receives financial support from the Arts Council (North West), helped 50 projects in Cumbrian schools last year, involving more than 8,000 children and 130 professional artists.

Artists are encouraged to take up residences in schools for anything from just a few days to several weeks. Support is provided to teachers and artists in the preparation and development stages of projects.

Dr Margaret Riches, director of Cumbria Arts in Education, said: “By working alongside artists, young people can be inspired to think and work creatively.”

Councillor Roger Bingham, cabinet member responsible for Cultural and Community, said: “This is a terrific new tool that emphasises the important link between art and education in Cumbrian schools.”
