31/8/2006 - Copeland Neighbourhood Forums discuss waste and mineral matters

A special combined meeting of Bootle & Seascale and Gosforth & Ennerdale Neighbourhood Forums takes place at 7:00pm on Thursday 7 September in Drigg and Carleton village hall.

The meeting will debate the county council's draft Minerals and Waste Development Framework, a new type of plan that will set out policies and proposals for minerals and waste development for the next 12 years.

It will feature a short presentation about the future storage of low-level radioactive waste. There will be speakers from Cumbria County Council planning department, this is where those attending will be able to get their questions answered. This will be followed by group discussions, and finally an open session where local residents will be able to give their views.

To help people with giving their views about the possible options a discussion paper has been produced.   It highlights the need to provide for the biggest change in waste management ever, with a move away from landfill to more sustainable methods. It also discusses the issue of radioactive waste and includes sites that could be considered for new waste facilities.

The document is available via the county council's website - go to www.cumbria.gov.uk and click on 'planning and environment' - or from the Citadel Chambers in Carlisle. Copies can also be viewed at local libraries and district offices.
