25/8/2006 - Nightime working signals conculsion to £820,000 John Whinnerah scheme

Workmen will work throughout the night to surface roads around Barrow's new John Whinnerah Roundabout as the £800,000 improvement scheme comes to a close.

Engineers will be laying the new surface at night in an effort to avoid disruption. The Work will be carried out over four nights between Tuesday, August 29th, and Friday, September 1st. Every effort will be made to keep noise to a minimum, particularly after 9pm.

Temporary traffic signals will be in operation.   Homes and businesses in the area have been informed by letter.

Once the new road surface is down only minor works on the footway and the new roundabout remain to be done, such as erecting signs, road markings, surface treatments and erecting guardrails and the whole scheme is set to be finished by Friday September 8th, on time and on budget.

It is the final phase of the road improvement scheme and works are due to last for a further two weeks.

The scheme has involved carriageway resurfacing as well as the introduction of cycle lanes, street lighting, pedestrian guardrail, traffic islands and the construction of a new boundary wall around Homebase with alterations to the car park and the installation of a larger, repositioned roundabout.

It was designed to improve traffic flow and help support regeneration and job creation in Barrow.

The scheme has involved close co-operation between Cumbria County Council and Barrow Borough Council.

The improvement has been delivered through the county council's Transport Capital Programme with the help of £620,000 funding from the North West Development Agency through West Lakes Renaissance and with £200,000 from the county council's New Vision Initiative.
