24/8/2006 - County council congratulates GCSE pupils

Pupils across Cumbria have today (Thursday 24 August) received congratulations from Cumbria County Council following publication of the GCSE results.

Pupils in the county have done well again this year, building on the improvements of previous years.   A detailed analysis of the results is still to be completed but they look like being good news for the county's pupils.

County councillor Philip Chappelhow is cabinet spokesman for Children's Services.   He said:

"The results from individual schools are still coming in to us, and it is still too early to have a detailed analysis.

"But from the results we have got in it seems that there's has been a good performance in the GCSEs in many of our schools and indeed it looks like nearly two thirds of the schools are reporting 5 or more A*-C grades which are either up or well up on their results from last year.

"I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the pupils and the teachers and parents who give them invaluable support.   Together, everyone has worked very hard to raise standards throughout our schools and as we can see today all that hard work is certainly paying dividends."

Notes for Editors
