16/8/2006 - Innovative library service attracts red rose attention

Cumbria County Council will be showcasing its innovative Library Links service to a team of council officials from Lancashire on Friday (18 August).

The delegation from Lancashire County Council are spending the day in Cumbria to find out more about the initiative which is giving rural readers a link to library services in village shops in Lazonby, Melmerby and Halbankgate.

As well as carrying the latest in popular paperback fiction and non-fiction, each Library Link provides access to the Library Service’s full stock of over 1.5 million books and other items, any of which can be reserved and delivered to the store.

During their visit, the Lancashire delegation will have the chance to find out more about the service from Cumbria County Council’s leader Tim Stoddard.

Councillor Stoddard said: “We are very proud of the work we do to ensure people living in rural areas have access to council services.

“Library Links are providing the ultimate in convenience for regular lovers of lending and I am looking forward to explaining more about the scheme to representatives from Lancashire County Council who are keen to explore new ways of providing library services to rural communities.”

Councillor Roger Bingham, the Cabinet member responsible for Cumbria’s Library Service, said: “The Library Link service is available during the opening hours of each store, allowing users to have much greater access to services than we have traditionally been able to provide."
