27/4/2006 - Cumbria County Council elects new Chairman

Today at Cumbria County Council's Annual General Meeting, County Councillor Allan Caine was elected Chairman for the coming year.  County Councillor Allan Toole was elected as Vice-chairman.

Allan Caine was a member of the County Council from 1993 to 1997 and joined again in 2005. He represents Harrington Clifton and Stainburn division and was last year's Vice Chairman of the Council. In addition to his county council responsibilities, Councillor Caine has represented Harrington on Allerdale Borough Council for 11 years and the Town Council for 15 years.

In his previous working life Allan, who lives in Harrington, worked in Cumbria's steel industry. Councillor Caine says: 

"It is a tremendous honour to be elected Chairman of Cumbria County Council.  I am looking forward to championing the hard work of the County Council both inside and outside Cumbria over the next 12 months.

"In taking on this role I would like to pay tribute to the dedication and example shown by my predecessor Councillor John Collier."

County Councillor Alan Toole joined the County Council in 1993. As well as representing the Belah division, he has served as the Chairman of the council's Youth Working Group and Vice-Chairman of Carlisle's Local Committee.  Commenting on his appointment, Councillor Toole says:

"I'm delighted to have been chosen as the council's new Vice-Chairman and look forward to working for the people of Cumbria in the year ahead."
