Pupils in Millom are to be given an intensive day’s training into road safety that will involve them learning about the devastation caused by road traffic accidents.
The event takes place on April 21st at Millom Secondary School, where media are invited to attend the morning’s Road Awareness Training for 130 Year 10 pupils beginning at 9:00am.
Hard-hitting films on the dangers of pedestrians using mobile phones or iPods will be shown. There will be a media opportunity to interview Cumbria Fire and Rescue’s Dave Edgar who will be accompanied on his visit by several local fire-fighters and two fire appliances.
In the afternoon, the team will be delivering their sobering road safety message to the school’s 40 Sixth Form pupils.
Cumbria Fire and Rescue’s Dave Edgar said: "Getting young people to think carefully about their own road safety is extremely important. These school visits are designed to get the message across that failing to think before crossing the road or getting into a friend's car can have devastating consequences."
The Road Awareness Training has been co-ordinated by Safer Roads for Cumbria - the partnership organisation of Cumbria County Council, Highways Agency, Cumbria Constabulary, Capita, Cumbria Chamber of Commerce, the Primary Care Trusts, Freight Transport Association, Road Haulage Association and Cumbria Safety Cameras.
