5/4/2006 - Kendal's new bus routes up and running

This week saw the start of the new Kendal town centre bus network redesigned after Cumbria County Council asked local people where they wanted routes to run.

The county council's is subsidising the new routes after Stagecoach said last year it could no longer run Kendal town services on a commercial basis.

Significant changes to the network have been based on comments made in the intensive consultations which took place in Kendal in the autumn last year.

Most services are now running to new timetables which offer the same or an improved level of service.

Improvements include:

More through-services across town with better connections between most services.

Extra late afternoon journeys for the Sandylands, Hallgarth, Larch Grove, Vicarage Park, Wattsfield, Collinfield and Kirkbarrow areas.

Improved co-ordination with West Coast Main Line trains at Oxenholme.

Later-running services to/from Oxenholme Station and Westmorland Hospital.

Minor re-routing of services to Queen Katherine School to offer closer pick up points to pupils homes.

Timetables have been distributed to more than 9,000 households and details of the new services can be found in the new yellow leaflets available from Kendal Library and Tourist Information Centre and other usual outlets.

Fares on the town services will be unchanged with day and weekly tickets offering discounts for regular travellers..

Holders of NoWCard concessionary passes will be entitled to free travel on all services after 9.30am Monday to Friday and all day on a Saturday. Half adult fares will apply before 9.30am

Bus Services in the town are currently operating from the bus station during roadworks on Stricklandgate which include improvements to bus stop facilities. Buses will return to Stricklandgate as soon as the current works are finished.
