Garlands Hospital Archives : Exhibition

A free exhibition looking back over 100 years at Carlisle's Garlands Mental Hospital returns, following a successful launch at Harraby Community Centre, Carlisle in November 2017. The exhibition aims to get us all talking about mental health using archives which date back as far as the 1860's to provide a glimpse into the very early days of mental health care provision in Cumbria, the patients at the Garlands and their treatments.

Maps, photos and recently released patient records from our archives have been formatted into 4 large displays that will travel around the county to provide a snapshot into daily life at Carlisle's Garlands Hospital. The exhibition displays will shine a spotlight on the 100-year-old case notes of 'inmates' like Edward, William, Mary, Hannah and many more.

Time to Change

Time to Change is a national campaign to end the stigma and discrimination often experienced by people with mental health problems.

Since Time to Change began in 2007, 3.4 million adults in England have improved attitudes towards mental health problems - that's an improvement of 8.3% between 2008 and 2014. And more people than ever are able to be open about their mental health problems.
