Challenging racism

A member of staff raised a complaint about an elected councillor who used racially derogative language. On investigation it was demonstrated that the councillor had a history of using racist language, and the case was taken to the Standards Committee, who banned the Councillor from the Council for three months.

We have trained Councillors in Equality awareness, and are working on a project with Councillors across the six District Councils of Cumbria, and are working with Parish Councils on issues that range from community relations with Gypsy and Travellers, to dealing with racist mistreatment on people in isolated communities.

Across Cumbria’s schools the Council assists in addressing racist incidents, which includes positive work carried out with school teachers, children, governors and parents. Over 150 racist incidents are monitored and responded to each year.
