Fire in a commercial building in Workington

At 04:57 firefighters were called to a commercial building fire on Lillyhall Industrial Estate, Lillyhall in Workington. Two fire engines from Workington attended the incident and found a quantity of wood was on fire in a first floor store room. Crews, two wearing breathing apparatus, used a thermal imaging camera, two hose reel jets and a lighting rig to put out the fire. The fire service was at the scene for one hour and 25 minutes.

At 11:23 firefighters were called to a chimney fire in a home on Penny Bridge, Ulverston. One fire engine, from Ulverston, attended the incident and crews put out the fire using a hose reel jet and chimney rods. Crews were detained for an hour.

At 04:34 firefighters were called to a flat fire on Egerton Court, Barrow-in-Furness. Crews, one from Barrow, one from Ulverston and one from Walney, attended the incident. Firefighters, four wearing breathing apparatus, used two hose reel jets, two thermal imaging cameras and a large fan to extinguish the fire. Crews were detained for two hours.

At 11:22 firefighters were called to a road traffic collision on Hindpool Road. Two cars were involved leaving one of the cars balanced on a bollard and the second car. Fortunately nobody was trapped and there was no fire. Crews made the scene safe by stabilising the vehicles. The scene was left with the police once a recovery vehicle had removed the cars.

At 18:43 firefighters were called to a road traffic collision involving two vehicles on the A5092 Lower Green. Two fire engines from Ulverston attended the incident and extracted one casualty from a vehicle which was on its roof. Crews were on the scene for 45 minutes.

At 18:55 firefighters were called to a fire in a conservatory of a cottage at Cartmel Fell. Firefighters, one crew from Grange and one from Windermere, attended the incident and found the conservatory well alight on arrival. Crews, four wearing breathing apparatus, used three hose reel jets, one main jet, a light portable pump, a thermal imaging camera and small tools to control and extinguish the fire. Crews were at the scene for two hours and 40 minutes.

At 18:10 firefighters were called to a report of an unattended bonfire on Marne Avenue. There was rubbish smouldering in a garden. A hose reel jet was used by the crew to put out the 5m x 5m bonfire. They then damped the whole area down.

At 06:40 firefighters were called to a disused school on Edenfold, Bolton, in Appleby-in-Westmorland. Crews, one from Appleby and two from Sedbergh, used two hose reel jets and two thermal imaging cameras to bring the fire under control. A fire investigation is underway into the cause of the fire. The Police have also attended the incident.

At 10:47 firefighters were called to rescue a cat which had been stuck up a tree for two days on Old Hutton, Old Hutton. Crews, from Sedbergh, used a ladder to rescue the cat.

At 17:19 firefighters were called to a report of a cooker fire on Levens Drive. An electric kettle had been placed on top of a cooker and was well alight. The crew used a fire blanket to douse the flames and then removed the cooker outside.

At 10:22 firefighters were called to a HGV which had overturned on the A596, Crofton Thursby. Crews, from Wigton, Penrith, Carlisle East and Carlisle West, used glass cutting equipment to release the driver from the cab. The male casualty was then handed into the care of paramedics.

At 13:27 six fire engines from Barrow, Ulverston, Grange, Millom and the water bowser and support pump from Penrith were called to a barn fire on Rakesmoor Lane. The fire involved a building measuring approximately 100m x 40m Firefighters in breathing apparatus used three main jets, two ground monitors and compressed air foam to bring the blaze under control.

Two firefighters went into the barn to take gas cylinders outside. The crews then removed burning material using heavy machinery, assisted by on-site staff.

Police closed the road and local people were advised to remain indoors with their windows and doors shut while firefighters tackled the blaze and put it out.

Firefighters left the scene just before 8.30pm.

At 00:27 firefighters were called to a road traffic collision involving a single vehicle on the M6 northbound between junction 41 and 42. Crews, one from Penrith and one from Lazonby, found the incident involved one car which had left the carriageway. They used small hand tools to release a male casualty who was then taken to hospital by paramedics. Crews were at the scene for 45 minutes.

At 01:32 firefighters attended Hall Garth, Barrow-in-Furness, after reports of flooding from a sudden downpour. Crews, from Barrow, found the street was under around a foot of water and had entered two properties. Crews pumped water from the two properties and mopped them out.

At 08:40 firefighters were called to a road traffic collision between two vehicles with four people trapped at Bootle Station. Crews, one from Bootle and one from Millom, extracted the casualties using cutting equipment, small tools and wedges. All the casualties were handed into the care of paramedics. Crews were in attendance for one hour and ten minutes.

Crews used cutting equipment and small tools to extract the casualty who was then handed into the care of the paramedics. Crews were at the scene for one hour.

Fire crews, one from Kirkby Stephen and one from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, attended the incident and rescued one casualty from a vehicle using a paraguard stretcher which had gone down an embankment. Crews were on the scene for 30 minutes.

On arrival the crews, from Workington and Cockermouth, found one casualty trapped in a car. Fire crews used two sets of cutting equipment and stabilisation equipment to release the casualty who was then handed into the care of paramedics. Crews were at the scene for 45 minutes.

At 20:01 firefighters were called to reports of a dog in distress in the River Eden near to Mayors Drive, Carlisle. Three fire engines, one from Carlisle East, one from Carlisle West and one from Penrith, attended the incident. Crews used a boat and swift water rescue equipment to rescue the dog from the water who was then reunited with its owner. Crews were at the scene for one and a half hours.

At 11:50 firefighters were called to a cow which was stuck in a collapsed drain on an access road in Wickerslack from Crosby Ravensworth, Shap. Three fire engines, one from Shap and two from Penrith, attended the incident. Crews, wearing flood suits, used strops and lines to rescue the cow. Crews were at the scene for one hour and 30 minutes.

On arrival crews entered the building wearing breathing apparatus and found that a hairdryer had been left on in the property and overheated. Crews ventilated the property and were at the scene for 20 minutes.

At 02:50 crews were called to a report of a fire at an hotel on Newby Bridge Road. The fire was in the laundry room and the Beech Hill hotel had been evacuated when crews arrived. Firefighters, two in breathing apparatus, used a hose reel jet to bring the fire under control. A thermal imaging camera was then used to make sure there were no further hotspots. Police attended as it is believed the fire had been started deliberately.

At 03:11 firefighters were called to a road traffic collision with one people trapped on Church Stile, Burton in Kendal. Two fire engines, one from Milnthorpe and one from Carnforth, attended the incident which involved one vehicle. Crews used cutting equipment, stabilisation blocks and lighting to remove a casualty who was trapped on a fence. The casualty and one further casualty were then taken to hospital by paramedics. Crews were detained for 50 minutes.

At 08:41 firefighters were called to a large fire in a garage on Clay Flats, Workington. On arrival crews found a fire involving three cars and gas canisters well alight in a garage. Crews are currently fighting the fire using a ground monitor, a main jet and a hose reel jet. Two fire engines from Workington, two from Whitehaven, one from Penrith and one from Maryport are at the incident.

At 17:24 firefighters were called to a kitchen fire on New Close. Smoke had been seen issuing from the property and there was a smell of burning so a neighbour called the fire and rescue service. Firefighters had to make a forced entry and put out the fire, which was confined to the kitchen, using a hose reel jet. Two of the crew were in breathing apparatus. The cause was found to be electrical.

At 23:01 firefighters were called to Cavendish Dock Road, Barrow-in-Furness to assist paramedics after a casualty needed rescuing from a vessel. The crew used a ladder at the incident and were in attendance for 45 minutes. The coastguard was also in attendance.

At 07:26 firefighters were called to a report of hay on fire on the Raby to Lessonhall road in Kirkbride. Approximately 500 tonnes of hay was on fire at the rear of a steel framed building measuring 60m x 20m. Four fire engines, from Aspatria, Carlisle West, Penrith and Silloth, were called to the incident and firefighters, four wearing breathing apparatus, tackled the blaze using two hose reel jets.
The farmer also used farming machinery to remove hay from the barn.
The fire was extinguished at 11:51.

At 13:57 firefighters were called to rescue a man who had fallen into a river on Curzon Street, Maryport. A fire engine from Maryport and Workington attended the incident. On arrival crews found on intoxicated male in the water. Crews used a nine metre ladder and general purpose line to rescue the casualty. They remained at the scene for approximately 25 minutes.

At 12:41 firefighters were called to a large gas leak in a gas installation off Station Road, Arnside.
One crew from Milnthorpe and one from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident. Crews used a ground monitor to supress the gas cloud.
All properties within 200m of the incident were evacuated and crews used ladders to close nearby windows. The railway line has been closed.

At 15:12 firefighters were called to a road traffic collision on Parkside Road, Kendal. Two fire engines from Kendal attended the incident and on arrival they found a crash between two vehicles with two people trapped. Crews used cutting equipment to remove the roof of a vehicle. One casualty was taken to hospital via air ambulance and another via land ambulance. Crews were at the scene for approximately one hour and 10 minutes.

At 22:40 firefighters were called to a report of a road traffic collision and car fire on Corporation Road. A car had gone on to the pavement and into railings. The driver was in the care of the ambulance service and firefighters tackled the blaze using a hose reel jet. One firefighter wore breathing apparatus.

At 04:23 four fire engines from Wigton, Aspatria, Carlisle East and Carlisle West attended a fire involving two vehicles, one of which contained a number of vehicle tyres, on Station Road in Wigton. Firefighters used six breathing apparatus, four hose reels, breaking in equipment, environmental equipment and one thermal imaging camera to extinguish the fire. Crews were in attendance for approximately three hours. A fire investigation is in progress in conjunction with Cumbria Police.

At 13:14 one fire engine from Barrow, one fire engine from Grange and two fire engines from Ulverston attended a fire involving a car crushing machine at a commercial property on Bouthwood Road, Barrow-in-Furness. Firefighters used two breathing apparatus and two main branches from the compressed air foam system to extinguish the fire. Crews were in attendance for approximately two hours and fifteen minutes.

At 17:00 one fire engine from Barrow fire station and two fire engines from Ulverston fire station attended a fire on Broad Close, Barrow-in-Furness. The fire involved a small fridge freezer outside the property. The crews used one hose reel jet, two breathing apparatus and a positive pressure ventilation fan to extinguish the fire. The fire service were in attendance for thirty five minutes.

At 17:33 three fire engines from Ulverston and Kendal were sent to a report of a person in the water at Coniston Lake. Fire service swift water technicians attended and assisted mountain rescue personnel in rescuing one casualty using the fire rescue boat. The casualty was passed to the care of Paramedics and transported to hospital by ambulance.

At 20:04 firefighters were called to rescue an elderly man who had become stuck in a hedge, on Bay View Grove, Barrow-in-Furness, after falling whilst trimming it. The man, who was in his 80s, was removed from the hedge by fire crews from Barrow-in-Furness. The man was not injured during the incident.

At 12:45 firefighters were sent to a suspected fire at an hotel on Town Head. They found an electrical consumer unit had been involved in fire, leaving a cellar full of smoke. A high pressure fan was used to clear the smoke and the Queens Head Hotel was evacuated while the incident was dealt with.

At 14:36 firefighters were called to a report of a fire in the chimney stack of Beech Hill Hotel on Newby Bridge Road. They removed the fire to outside and used specialist chimney firefighting equipment to tackle the incident. A thermal imaging camera was used to make sure there were no further hot spots that could reignite.
